How to upgrade Moodle

moodleThis article covers the procedure for upgrading your Moodle installation.  Always remember to backup your Moodle site before performing an upgrade.


Backup

Start by backing up Moodle.

 

Maintenance mode

You need to start by putting your site in Maintenance mode.

  1. Log in with an administration account.
  2. Go to Site Administration > Server > Maintenance mode.
  3. Enter an optional message and click Enable.

 

Moodle files upgrade

  1. Use an FTP client, or your web hosting File Manager.
  2. Start by renaming the root directory where your Moodle files are stored on the web server to moodle_backup.
  3. Visit the Moodle site and download the latest version.
  4. Upload and extract the latest version to your web host.
  5. Copy the config.php file from moodle_backup to the new moodle directory.

 

Performing the upgrade

  1. Browse to http://yourMoodleSite/admin.
  2. Click the Continue button.
  3. Confirm that you are using the latest version of any non-standard plugins and click Continue.
  4. You should receive the message Database was successfully upgraded, click Continue.
  5. Click Continue a further 5 times.

 

Maintenance mode

Now you can come out of Maintenance mode.

  1. Log in with an administration account.
  2. Go to Site Administration > Server > Maintenance mode.
  3. Click Disable.
