Reset the password in Windows 7

windows XPThis procedure works for Windows 7.  It may well work for Windows 8 and 10, and even Windows XP, but this is untested.


Windows 7 Installation DVD

Start by booting your workstation to the installation DVD for Windows 7.
 
  1. Select the option to Repair Windows 7.
  2. Select the option for a Command Prompt.
  3. In Command Prompt, type regedit.

 

Regedit settings

  1. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  2. With HKLM selected, go to File > Load Hive...
  3. In new window, browse to the drive where the OS is installed.
  4. Go to <boot partition>\Windows\System32\config
  5. Select the SAM file, and click Open.
  6. For Key Name: enter REM_SAM.
  7. Go to HKLM\REM_SAM\SAM\Domains\Accounts\Users\000001F4
  8. Double-click string F.
  9. This will open an array of Hexadecimal numbers.
  10. Find the 11 number (row 8, column 2).
  11. Click to the right of this number.
  12. Press backspace to delete it and replace with the number 10.

Close the dialog box, and regedit, and reboot the workstation.

 

Log on

You should now be able to log on as the local administrator with no password.
