Listing the current directory with ls

linux-penguinGetting to grips with the command line in Linux will mean that you'll always be able to manage practically any Linux distribution (and there are literally hundreds) without having to learn a new interface.  Command line instructions are often quicker to implement as well.

Example uses

$ ls

Desktop Examples Pictures vmware mydirectory

Long list with extra detail.

$ ls -l

drwxr-xr-x 2 itexpert root 4096 2007-06-11 20:11 Desktop

lrwxrwxrwx 1 itexpert root 26 2007-06-11 20:11 Examples -> /usr/share/example-content

drwxr-xr-x 2 itexpert root 4096 2007-06-11 20:11 Pictures

drwxr-xr-x 2 itexpert root 4096 2007-06-11 20:11 vmware

drwxr-xr-x 2 itexpert root 4096 2007-06-11 20:11 mydirectory
