Installing vsftpd on your web server

webServerToolsvsftpd is an anachronym for Very Secure FTP Daemon.  Once installed it allows you to access your web server using the ftp protocol.  I used Ubuntu 12.04 LTS for this installation.

Visit the vsftpd site for more information.

Installation

Once your web server is built, log on as the user that you created and perform the following:

$ sudo apt-get install vsftpd
$ sudo vi /etc/vsftpd.conf

Uncomment the following lines...

local_enable=YES
write_enable=YES

You might also want to change the following line...

anonymous_enable=NO

FTP user account

It's now good practice to create an FTP user account.

$ sudo useradd ftpuser
$ sudo passwd ftpuser

Enter and confirm a password

$ sudo mkdir /home/ftpuser
$ sudo chown ftpuser:ftpuser /home/ftpuser

Port Access

Before you can use FTP (file transfer protocol) on this server, you will need to ensure that port 21 is open.

Additionally if you want to use SFTP (secure file transfer protocol) you will also need port 22 open

FileZilla

With vsftpd installed, you'll now be able to start using FileZilla to upload and download files to your web server.

Thanks for visiting.
